Well shoot, they made a good match-up, and what’s more, the preview shows they’ve got the tone right. Props, Death Battle.

When they covered this on the podcast, the winner was Courage, with the logic being that while Scoob held the advantage in stats due to crossover scaling, particularly crossover scaling to other DC dogs like Krypto, Courage had the god bone, an ultra-temping super-bone that dogs are compelled to lick until they die. It’s cursed treasure by way of milkbone. Courage can resist the god bone due to his incredible, Green Lantern level willpower (did you see the episode where the robot Courage beats the crap out of him and Courage keeps going? It was like Thing vs the Champion), but Scoob is a notorious glutton. The god bone was ruled a hard counter to Scoob, and Courage’s preview showed off the god bone, so it should be gg.

Now, some things might be different from the podcast. They seem to be reigning in the crossover scaling for Scoob. I doubt he’s going to whip out a yellow lantern ring, though it would be hilarious if yellow lanterns went 0-2. Some have predicted a swerve coming where they rule Scoob actually does have the willpower to resist the god bone. I kind of doubt it. Maybe it’ll happen, but I don’t think it will. Maybe I’m wrong here because Scoob has a bazillion pieces of media and maybe in one he no-sells mind control, but I remember him getting mind controlled pretty easily by a circus clown with a coin in the original cartoon. If Harry the hypnotist and a coin can mind control Scoob, I don’t see him being able to stand up to the god bone’s temptation, especially when food has been a major motivating factor throughout his career. Maybe if Shaggy was like, about to fall into a vat of acid, Scoob would snap out of the trance, but wouldn’t that be outside help? That would be like having Batman show up to bail out Scoob. And speaking of Batman, the Bat-curse of Death Battle might strike again against Scoob. He’s an official member of the Batman team. I’m serious. Look up Batman’s heroclix. The one from the Batman Team-up set has the Mystery Inc keyword. Scooby is a Batman character. Scooby loosing would be yet another predictable Bat defeat.

Courage also seems overall the better fighter, mostly because he routinely throws hands with his monsters as opposed to Scoob, who usually runs away until they trap the monster in the final few minutes through slapstick and Rube Goldberg ingenuity. Since it’s  become a running gag that stats are equalized, I’m anticipating Scoob having similar stats to Courage, probably because he turned into a puddle on A Pup Named Scooby-Doo and lit up the universe in one of the many, many Scooby cartoons I’ve never seen.

God, isn’t it weird how Scooby is an evergreen franchise? How’d that happen? It feels like such a product of the 70’s, yet every generation has a Scooby.

But yeah, I’m anticipating similar stats, mostly because they keep equalizing stats, or Courage having slightly better stats. I think Courage is going to win off his greater combat experience, quicker thinking, and ability to pull whatever he needs out of nowhere. Scoob was never the brains, that was Velma, and he was never the tech guy, that was Fred, and he was never the fighter, that was Daphne. But Courage is the brains, a techie, and a fighter. Courage is a one-man Mystery Inc, and that’s why I got courage that Courage is going to win.
